Health tourism providers have developed as intermediaries uniting potential medical tourists with provider hospitals and other organisations. This Company have started offering services live Nurse Care managers to assist patients with pre- and post-travel medical issues. Also providing resources for follow-up care upon the patient's return.

(After the patient has been treated, the patient has the option of either recuperating in the hospital or at a paid accommodation nearby. Many hospitals also give the option of continuing the treatment through telemedicine.)

Statistics:

Medical tourism is a growing sector in India Showing an annual growth rate of 30%

A study by ASSOCHAM reported that the year 2011 saw 850,000 medical tourists in India and projected that by 2015 this number would have risen to 3,200,000. The medical tourism industry in India alone is estimated at a whopping $3 billion and it is poised to grow to $7-8 billion by 2020 .

Popular Treatments:

The most popular treatments sought in India by medical tourists are alternative medicine, bone-marrow transplant, cardiac bypass, eye surgery and hip replacement. India is known in particular for heart surgery, hip resurfacing and other areas of advanced medicine.

Process:

The person seeking medical treatment contacts a medical tourism provider. The provider usually requires the patient to provide a medical report, including the nature of ailment, local doctor’s opinion, medical history, and diagnosis, and may request additional information. Certified physicians or consultants then advise on the medical treatment. The approximate expenditure, choice of hospitals and tourist destinations, and duration of stay, etc., is discussed. After signing consent bonds and agreements, the patient is given recommendation letters for a medical visa, to be procured from the concerned embassy. The patient travels to the destination country, where the medical tourism provider assigns a case executive, who takes care of the patient's accommodation, treatment and any other form of care. Once the treatment is done, the patient can remain in the tourist destination or return home.

Factors that have led to the increasing popularity of medical travel include the high cost of health care, long wait times for certain procedures, in their own country accompanied by the ease and affordability of international travel, and improvements in both technology and standards of care in many.
